Free admission

Each year, the Lansing Concert Band performs a Young Person's Concert for Ingham county school children. This year, we've decided to perform the concert on a Sunday afternoon for families as well. Charlotte's beautiful Performing Arts Center will be the venue for this free concert. During the concert, we perform excerpts of music from many of the countries of the world. We also perform a piece that clearly demonstrates all the instruments in the modern concert band, to help the children identify the individual instrument sounds during the concert. We also reinforce the concert with audio-visual displays. Finally, we will have an "instrument petting zoo" to give children the opportunity to touch the instruments, as well as other activities following the concert. We hope you can join us for this new concert format, and let us know via our social media how well you liked it!

Special Guests: The Capital City Brass Band, conducted by Jim Otto

Our 74th season begins with a joint concert, featuring our friends in the Capital City Brass Band and their conductor, Mr. Jim Otto. Dr. McIlhagga returns to the LCB's podium as our artistic director and principal conductor. He has selected a very enjoyable program featuring British music. We will perform selections by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gordon Jacob. Our brass section will join with the Capital City Brass Band to perform an opening fanfare, and then the CCBB joins the LCB for a rousing final selection, the finale from the Kalinnikov Symphony No. 1.  We hope you will join us for this exciting afternoon of great brass band and concert band music!

Young Person's Introduction to the Band 2020

Wharton Center for the Performing Arts (map)

Registration is now open for the 2020 edition of our Young Person's Introduction to the Band Concert. This year’s concert theme is “Music Around the World.”

Everywhere we go in our lives, we find music. There is music at the mall, music in the movies, music on the radio, music at school, music in churches, music at sporting events. People like to exercise to music. Our forms of entertainment almost always feature music. If some alien creatures from another solar system observed us, they would almost certainly report back to their leaders: “These earthlings cannot survive without lots of music. It is one of their basic needs, along with food, air and water. All over the earth, people listen to music.” The musical selections we will play in the concert provide many examples of music we encounter during our daily life.

There is no admission fee for this year's program, thanks to a generous grant from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Arts Council of Greater Lansing, and additional financial support from members of the Lansing Concert Band.

The 2020 Study Guide is now available here.
