Kenneth G. Bloomquist Prize

The Kenneth G. Bloomquist Prize was established by the Lansing Concert Band in 2011 to recognize and reward an outstanding high school musician in the mid-Michigan area. The award is named in honor of LCB Director Emeritus and former director of bands at Michigan State University, Ken Bloomquist. The $1,000 prize is awarded to the winner, who will also perform with the LCB as a featured soloist at our annual Young Artist's Concert held in the spring. This year’s performance will be held April 28, 2018.

Application information

The competition is open to high school musicians in grades 9–12 during the 2017-18 academic year, enrolled in school from the following counties: Allegan, Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Genesee, Gratiot, Hillsdale, Ingham, Ionia, Isabella, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kent, Lenawee, Livingston, Midland, Montcalm, Oakland, Saginaw, Shiawassee and Washtenaw.

Performers of woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments may apply.  As an applicant, you must select a work for your instrument that has an available band or wind ensemble arrangement.  An audio or video recording of your performance must be submitted with piano, band, or orchestral accompaniment.

The winner will perform their solo selection in concert with the Lansing Concert Band on April 28, 2018 at East Lansing High School.  A cash prize of $1,000 will be awarded along with a professional recording of the performance. 

Deadline for application is February 12, 2018.  Judges’ decisions are final.  The winner is responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses.

Apply via U.S. Mail

  • Download the application form, print a copy and complete it.  Please print legibly, particularly your e-mail address.
  • Prepare an unedited cassette, CD or DVD audio/video recording of you performing your selected work with accompaniment.  A piano accompaniment is acceptable for the application process.  If the work is multi-movement, select the first or last movement; play the entire movement.  If the work is through-composed, play the piece in its entirety.  The submitted recording should not contain any spoken words or other identifying information.  Only the audio from video recordings will be judged.
  • Include a personal check for the $25 application fee (checks made payable to Lansing Concert Band).  The application fee will be refunded only in the event that a winner is not selected.

Your completed application packet should include: Completed application form, recording of your audition piece and a personal check to cover the application cost.

Your application will not be considered unless the application packet is complete.

Online Application process

  • Prior to completing the online application form, be certain you have an unedited recording of you performing your selected work with accompaniment. A piano accompaniment is acceptable for the application process.  If the work is multi-movement, select the first or last movement; play the entire movement.  If the work is through-composed, play the piece in its entirety.  Accepted audio formats include: .mp3, .m4a, .wma, .wav, .flac, .ogg and .aac formats.  Accepted video formats include: .avi, .wmv, .mov or any MPEG file format.  The submitted recording should not contain any spoken words or other identifying information.  Only the audio from video recordings will be judged.
  • Complete the online application (link appears below).  Be certain you include all the required information (indicated by a red asterisk).  Near the bottom of the application form is a button, which will allow you to upload your audition recording.  Shortly after completing the application, you should receive an e-mail message confirming the receipt of your application form and recording.  We will also send a follow-up message when we've had the opportunity to verify the successful transmission of your recording.
  • Download the parental/legal guardian consent form (link appears below).  Print the form.  Sign your name indicating the recording you submitted is yours.  Have your parent sign the form indicating they approve of your participation and performance on April 28, if selected.
  • Include a personal check for the $25 application fee (checks made payable to Lansing Concert Band).  The application fee will be refunded only in the event that a winner is not selected.

Mail the completed permission form and personal check to cover the application cost.  Your online application will not be considered until we receive this additional information.
